Talk Title: Light-matter Interfaces for Quantum Information and Sensing at ARL

Abstract: Quantum information science has recently been designated an Army Priority Research Area.  In response, the Army Research Lab has substantially grown its in-house efforts in Adelphi, MD, and built a strong relationship with the Quantum Technology Center.  This talk will provide an overview of our research in quantum information science and sensing.  Our efforts focus on optical cavities and nanophotonics as efficient interfaces to atoms and materials for quantum memories and sensors.  I will describe two examples in more detail.  In the first, I will discuss multiplexed quantum memories using cold atoms coupled to a ring cavity. In the second, I will describe RF and microwave sensing using room-temperature Rydberg atoms, providing nearly continuous detection of carrier frequencies from 0 to 20 GHz.

Bio: Dr. Fredrik Fatemi is the Branch Chief for Quantum Sciences at the Army Research Laboratory in Adelphi, MD, and associate director of the Quantum Technology Center.  Within ARL, he oversees a portfolio of research in quantum sensing and networks.  He received his PhD from the University of Virginia in molecular cluster physics, and then did an NRC postdoctoral fellowship at NIST-Gaithersburg on ultracold atomic collisions.  Dr. Fatemi joined ARL after working at the Naval Research Laboratory for 15 years, where he conducted research in atomic, molecular, laser, and optical physics.  He continues active research programs in nanophotonics, strong light-matter interactions, and atomic physics.
