Maryland Study on Offshore Wind Power

In a news article dated Oct. 21, 2010, a study from the University of Maryland Center for Integrative Environmental Research (CIER) finds that although offshore wind power would be a feasible way to meet Marylands renewable energy goals, two issues will need to be addressed before offshore wind development can move forward:

  • Likely interference with the NASA Wallops radar installation, as well as military operations;
  • Inadequate transmission facilities on Maryland's Eastern Shore that would raise the cost of moving the energy produced to the utility grids; this could be accomplished most economically in Delaware.
